T65A2 surfaces quietly in the fog. He is a clear "sprouter" - a teenage boy whose dorsal fin is on its growth spurt. By the time his fin is fully grown, it could be up to six feet tall. He is pictured here at 13 years old, and will keep growing for another 5 years or so.
In this second feeding frenzy moment, a female orca jumps straight out of the water. Although it can't be seen, she was playing with a common murre (a small seabird), and finally jumped and caught it in her mouth. Killer whales are known to play with their food, however they don't usually eat birds and do this as a catch-and-release sport.
